The Curtiss Jacobs Gallery proudly announces the first solo-exhibition by acclaimed artist Cedric Smith in Harlem, through March 25th.
The exhibition “Facing History” represents a self-reflective collection of 14 mixed media works on paper, canvas and wood created by acclaimed artist, Cedric Smith. Smith is well known for integrating vivid, eye catching colors with vintage photographs of African-Americans from all aspects of life.
Smith, strategically layers paint, photos, paper and occasionally fabric to depict a moment in time. Behind every seemingly nostalgic and whimsical portrait, Smith subliminally corrects the explicit neglect of positive African-American imagery in advertising that has troubled him since his childhood. Much of his current work is devoted to redressing these observations and “Facing History”.
